Phyllis E. Gourley

May 1, 1924 — Dec. 9, 2015

Phyllis E. Gourley, of Winamac, (formerly of Wheatfield) went home to be with the Lord at 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Monticello Healthcare Center in Monticello.

She was born on May 1, 1924, on the family farm in rural Beaver Township, Pulaski County, to the late Laban D. and Gertrude (Davis) Nice.  

She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1942. Phyllis married Robert W. Gourley on June 13, 1942. He passed away Feb. 5, 1989.

Phyllis was a member of Paul’s Chapel Church. She enjoyed reading poems at church and reading her Bible daily.

Phyllis enjoyed the outdoors, especially hummingbirds, country life, hunting, fishing and was considered a “Champion Noodler” of the Tippecanoe River in Pulaski County. She enjoyed playing euchre, especially Sunday nights at St. James Salem Church. Phyllis enjoyed working in her yard and her flower garden. She was an avid mushroom hunter.

Phyllis loved her family very much, especially her many grandchildren. She will be dearly missed. 

Survivors include her daughters: Daisy [Don] Hahn of Winamac, and Connie [Stan] Myers of Monterey; sons: Doug [Beulah “Billy”] Gourley Sr. of Winamac, Clyde [Lena] Gourley of Winamac, and Rocky [Laurie] Gourley of Winamac; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Laban D. and Gertrude (Davis) Nice; husband Robert W. Gourley; sister Deola Cloud; and brothers: Byron Nice and Arlo Nice. 

Visitation was at Frain Mortuary from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, and was one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services were held 1 p.m.  Friday, Dec. 11,  at  Frain Mortuary, Winamac. Rev. Phillip Messer officiated. Burial took place in Clark Cemetery, Monticello.

Memorial contributions may be given to the funeral home to help with funeral expenses.
