Paul E. Hettinger
Paul E. Hettinger, 96, of Winamac, passed away Wednesday, June 18, at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Winamac. He was born on Jan. 3, 1929 in Star City, to the late Ernest and Erma (Reinholt) Hettinger. After graduating from Star City High School, Paul served in the US Navy during the Korean War. On June 26, 1954, he married Shirley J. Wenner in Winamac. She passed away on Nov. 23, 2023.
Paul was a life member of the Winamac VFW Post #1728 and Winamac American Legion Post #71. He lived an active life through the years. In his youth, he enjoyed racing go-carts. Paul and Shirley enjoyed playing cards, roller skating and dancing. For many years, Paul was a bowler and golfer – participating in numerous leagues in the area. He was an avid fisherman. Paul knew the Tippecanoe River like the back of his hand and cherished the family fishing trips to Wisconsin.
He is survived by daughter Lera [Paul] Mayer, Winamac; son Paul A. Hettinger, Winamac; granddaughters: Shirley Good, Winamac and Miranda “Mandi” Hettinger, Winamac; grandsons: David [Jenny] Mayer, Valparaiso, Paul T. [Mary] Hettinger, St. Louis, Missouri, Kyle Hettinger, St. Louis, Missouri; great-granddaughters: Lera Jewell, Logansport and Aliya Mayer, Valparaiso; great-grandsons: Caleb Good, Winamac, Noah Mayer, Valparaiso and Mason Hettinger, St. Louis, Missouri; several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by parents: Ernest and Erma (Reinholt) Hettinger; wife Shirley J. (Wenner) Hettinger; brother Bill Hettinger; sisters: Vera Mae Hettinger and Mary Lou Hettinger.
Visitation was from 4-7 p.m., Monday, June 23, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Pastor Stephen Sundquist officiating.
Burial took place at Bell Center Cemetery in Bell Center. The VFW and American Legion conducted military graveside services.
