Jerry G. Sullivan Sr.
1Sg Jerry G. Sullivan Sr., U.S. Army Ret., 79, of Winamac, passed away at 6:11 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5, at IU Health LaPorte Hospital in La Porte.
He was born on June 12, 1937, in North Judson. Before graduating from Winamac High School in 1955, Jerry joined the U.S. Army Reserves and went on to attend Purdue University. Later in life, he proudly earned an associate degree online. On Oct. 3, 1959, he married the love of his life, Betty J. Burke, in North Judson. She survives.
Jerry was a lifelong farmer in Franklin Township, Pulaski County. He served in the U.S. Army for 49 years, nine months, and 18 days and served as a U.S. Army Recruiter before retirement. He was a member of the North Judson American Legion.
Jerry was a member of SS Cyril & Methodius Church in North Judson. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he had previously served as secretary.
Jerry was an active member of the Pulaski County Republican Party, having served as Franklin Township Precinct Committeeman and was a former member of the Pulaski County Drainage Board. He was a proud member of the NRA.
Jerry was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed playing golf and in his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball.
Jerry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was very proud of his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his wife Betty J. (Burke) Sullivan of Winamac; son Jerry G. “Jay” [Patty] Sullivan Jr. of Winamac; daughter Christine Marie [Todd Miller] Wood of Midland, Michigan; granddaughters: Anna Marie [Mark] Rojo, Alyse Marie Wood, Katie Marie Sullivan and Elizabeth Marie Wood; grandsons: Jason James Sullivan, Zach Michael Wood and Joseph Manta Wood; and brother Arthur Carl Mau Jr. of Winamac.
He was preceded in death by his father John Sullivan; mother Marjorie (Schricker) Sullivan Mau; stepfather Arthur Carl Mau Sr.; and brother James Sullivan.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a Knights of Columbus service. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at SS Cyril & Methodius Church in North Judson, with Rev. Terry Bennis officiating. Burial with military rites will take place at St. Jacob’s Cemetery in North Judson.
