James M. “Jim” Dowling

Sept. 10, 1947 — April 14, 2025

James M. “Jim” Dowling, 77, of Winamac, formerly of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14 at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. 

Jim was born on Sept. 10, 1947 to the late Dennis and Irene (Bixler) Dowling in Adrian, Michigan and was raised in Jasper, Michigan. While in college at Purdue University, Jim joined the US Navy and served in country during the Vietnam War. After his service, he returned to Purdue and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1977. 

Home for Jim was in Hopkinsville where he lived with his late wife Edna (Self) Dowling. He worked at White Hydraulics in Hopkinsville for several years. Jim enjoyed the company of many meaningful friends in Hopkinsville and Fairview, Kentucky. 

The family wishes to thank Judy Jackson, Stuart Zieman, Dan Lauffer and Howard Jones for their special and supportive relationships with Jim. Additionally, the family thanks the staff of Pulaski Health Care Center for the tender care of Jim over the past two years.

Jim is survived by brother Gerald “Jerry” [wife: Carol] Dowling; sisters: Denise [wife: Yolanda Baldwin] Dowling and Deelight [husband: Richard] Murphy; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Preceded in death by parents: Dennis and Irene (Bixler) Dowling; beloved wife Edna (Self) Dowling; and many cherished dogs.  

Cremation will take place at Frain Crematory in Winamac.

Graveside services were held at 11:30 a.m. (10:30 a.m. CDT) Tuesday, April 22 at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. Military honors were conducted by the US Navy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your local American Legion or VFW.
