Herbert E. “Ed” Johns

Herbert Edward “Ed” Johns, 76, of Winamac, passed away at his home on Monday, Aug. 12. 

He was born on Oct. 3, 1947, in Marion, Illinois to the late Loren Lee and Edna May (Walker) Johns. Ed served in the US Merchant Marines during the Vietnam War. He spent his 30-year long career working as a firefighter at LTV Steel. On Sept. 22, 2015, Ed married Lugina Maria “Gina” Ricchio. She passed away on Feb. 25, 2017. 

Ed enjoyed grabbing coffee at Chiro Coffee, going out to eat at Cruiser’s and visiting with friends. He loved his cat, Bella, who was a faithful companion. Ed will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by son Jason Scott Johns; step-sons: Anthony Ricchio and James Ricchio; step-daughter Jewel Ricchio; sister Edna Johns; brother Raymond Johns; sister-in-law Cindy Palmer; nieces: Janey, Patty, Kathy, Sandy, Tiffany, Erica and Tori; and nephew Robby.

Preceded in death by parents: Loren Lee and Edna May (Walker) Johns; wife Lugina Maria “Gina” (Ricchio) Johns; sister Lucy Fout; brother Loren Lawrence Johns; half-brothers: Paul Fann and Arbel Fann; and half-sister Laura May Gallagher.

Cremation will take place at Frain Crematory in Winamac.

Visitation will be from 10 -11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.  

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military honors at the funeral home.

Private scattering of cremated remains will take place in the Tippecanoe River in Winamac.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church in Winamac.
