Donald H. Hirsch

Donald H. Hirsch, 73, Monterey, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, in the University of Chicago Medical Center, Chicago.

He was born Dec. 23, 1941, in Chicago, to Edwin and Rose (Jackel) Hirsch.

Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching NASCAR, and watching sports. He loved riding his motorcycle, spending time with family, gardening and traveling. Don was an avid carpenter and remodeled and built many homes over the years.

He was a resident of Lake Bruce and Monterey for the past 25 years and formerly resided in Wheatfield.

Don, a longtime member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Monterey, owned the Lake Bruce Resort for many years. He was a school bus driver for the Culver Community Schools Corporation, and formerly with the Kankakee Valley School Corporation and Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation. He especially enjoyed driving the wrestling and basketball teams and watching their matches and games. He also enjoyed driving students on field trips and was always eager to drive whenever he was asked.

Survivors include his beloved longtime companion Christine Burzynski of Monterey; sons: Donald E. Hirsch of Madison, Wisconsin, Joseph R. [Tina] Hirsch of Kewanna, Timothy D. [Wendy Shepherd] Hirsch of Kewanna, Allen Smith of Hammond, and Donald Smith of Watseka, Illinois; daughter Rebecca G. [Rob] Kolanowski of Plant City, Florida; granddaughter Amanda Hirsch; grandsons: Alex Hirsch, Matt Hirsch, Jake Hirsch, Damon [Destinie] Kolanowski, and Sean Kolanowski; great-grandson Noah Kolanowski; brothers: Gerald [Joyce] Hirsch of Fishers, and Dale [Connie] Hirsch of Crown Point; sister-in-law Sandy Hirsch of Valparaiso; and former wife Patricia Hirsch.

He was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Rose (Jackel) Hirsch; and brother Gene Hirsch.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A scriptural wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Monterey, with Rev. Bert Woolson officiating. Burial will take place in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Monterey.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
