Herman “Lee” Tweedie
Herman “Lee” Tweedie, of West Lafayette, passed away on March 12.
He was born on May 7, 1938, in the Jasper County Hospital at Rensselaer. He was the second child of Robert Francis and Catherine Gertrude (Zimmer) Tweedie. His siblings were the late Robert John, the late Kathleen [Donald] Servis and Nancy Anne [Thomas] Messman, all of Rensselaer.
He attended schools at Remington, Valparaiso, Wadena, Dayton and graduated from Buffalo High School and Purdue University.
On Aug. 10, 1958, he married Vera Lee Bible, daughter of Willard Raymond and Dora Gertrude (Imler) Bible, in the Buffalo Christian Church. Together, they had three sons: Bruce Jeffery [Erika], Robert Shawn [Marsha], and the late Paul Edward Tweedie; four grandchildren: Theresa [Kristofer] Jeanneret, Michael Francis Tweedie, Shannon Nicole Tweedie and Robert Braden Tweedie; and two great-grandchildren: Chloe and Sophia Jeanneret.
Lee started working for the Indiana Department of Transportation on Aug. 16, 1957, in the construction department as a highway technician. On Dec. 1, 2000, he retired as a project supervisor on road sites managing bridge and building construction.
On Oct. 16, 1960, he enlisted in the US Army Reserves at the North Judson artillery unit from which he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1961.
He was a member of the Elston Presbyterian Church of Lafayette. He was an active member of Winamac Lodge #262 F&AM, formerly of Winamac, serving as Worshipful Master in 1972, 1998, 1999, and 2000. He also served as secretary for many years. He was a member of Tippecanoe Chapter #96 Order of Eastern Star and was Worthy Patron several times. He served on the Advisor Committee for the Pulaski Chapter Order of DeMolay & Winamac Chapter Order of Rainbow. He was an ambassador to the Indiana Masonic Home at Franklin and a current member of Dayton Lodge #103 F&AM. He was also a member of the Greater Lafayette High Twelve Club.
In 1980, he became active in Boy Scouts. He was a committee member, assistant Scout Master and Scout Master of District #1 of the Sagamore Council Boy Scouts of America for 23 years. He received the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver. He was a member of Takachsin Lodge Order of the Arrow for 19 years, Chapter #1 Advisor, and a Vigil member.
He worked with the 4-H geology members for many years. His hobbies were traveling, rock hunting, lapidary work, fishing, collecting antique engines and Cushman Motor Scooters.
Visitation was on Friday, March 20, from noon until 2 p.m. at Springer-Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home of Monticello.
Funeral services celebrating Lee’s life commenced at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, beginning with Masonic services and followed by a message from Rev. Kevin Bowers representing the Elston Presbyterian Church of Lafayette. Military rites were rendered immediately following the services at the funeral home.
Burial followed in Buffalo Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Buffalo Cemetery. Envelopes were available at the funeral home.
