Phyllis A. Hulmes
Phyllis A. Hulmes, 76, of Winamac, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver.
She was born on Aug. 31, 1940, in Rankin, Illinois, to the late Lorin and Louise (Smith) Nease in Rankin, Illinois. Phyllis graduated from Rankin High School and also completed beauty school in Champaign, Illinois. On Nov. 19, 1960, she married the love of her life Leonard Hulmes in Rankin, Illinois. He preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 2010.
Phyllis was an active member of the Monterey United Methodist Church where she served as the pianist for more than 30 years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and was well known for her homemade noodles.
Phyllis was not only a hairdresser, but also an equal partner in the farming operation. She was also proud to be a homemaker. Phyllis enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing, and crocheting. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling with her friend Sandi Holcomb.
Phyllis was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister. She will be dearly missed by all.
Survivors include her daughters: Julie A. [Thomas] Girton of Monterey, and Janel R. [Christopher] Marsh of Peru; son Eric L. [Heather] Hulmes of Winamac; granddaughters: Megan [Matt] Carter, Riley Schultz and Sadie Schultz; grandsons: Casey [Whitney] Girton, Shane Hulmes, Tanner Hulmes and Torin Marsh; great-grandsons: Reese Carter and Hunter Girton; great-granddaughters: Breelyn Carter, Sydney Girton, and Kaylee Girton; sisters: Beverly Overbey, Carolyn Unzicker, Nancy [Dennis] Hari, and Jean Swanson; and brothers: Robert Nease, Tom [Dolly] Nease, and Larry [Pam] Nease.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lorin and Louise (Smith) Nease; husband Leonard Hulmes; and two infant sisters.
Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac, and one hour prior to services at the church Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Monterey United Methodist Church with Pastor Kevin Marsh officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Memorial Cemetery in Monterey.
