Irene Ida (Cords) Walter

Feb. 24, 1926 — April 18, 2016

Irene Ida (Cords) Walter, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior in Sun City, Arizona, on April 18. 

She was born on Feb. 24, 1926, in Francesville, to William and Minnie (Kruger) Cords.

Irene graduated from Medaryville High School in 1944 and attended Beauty School in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1946. 

She loved being a Bible study leader, coordinator for community Bible study, and she received Volunteer of the Year with Hospice of the Valley. She was an active member of American Lutheran Church in Phoenix and later at American Lutheran Church of Sun City. Irene received great joy in sharing her strong faith and love of the Lord. Her heart and door were always open to all. She loved sharing her beautiful roses and amaryllises. Her family and many friendships were a treasured value in her life.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Judy and Tom Alston of Belleville, Illinois; Donna and George Duda of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Bill and Shere Walter of Sun City, Arizona; and Linda and Rick Knight of Cave Creek, Arizona; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brothers: Howard and Judy Cords of Medaryville, and Merl Cords of Medaryville; and sister-in-law Charlotte Cords of Lafayette; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents William and Minnie Cords; brother Harry Cords; sister Leona Utterback; and infant brother Ralph.

A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, May 10, at St. James Salem United Church of Christ, Francesville, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Judith Doll officiating. Inurnment will follow in St. James Salem Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. James Salem United Church of Christ, Francesville.
