Winamac accepted bids for paving

After being awarded the Community Crossing grant funding, the Winamac Town Council is moving quickly to secure the paving that will begin and hopefully be completed this year. 
Winamac was recently awarded $146,199.75 of grant funding for a $292,399.50 paving project. As part of the project 25 streets will be repaved and 42 sidewalk ramps will be upgraded to be Americans with Disabilities (ADA) compliant.
Because the town was being proactive, council members were able to open bids for the project on Aug. 29. 
The council opened two bids ranging from $212,886.50 and $216,162.50. The council then referred the bids to town manager Brad Zellers to review. He is hoping that work can begin this year. 
In other business there was also a question if Zellers received any quotes regarding the removal of ash trees from the town road right-of-ways. Zellers said he is waiting for one more. 
New business was also addressed by the council. Zellers said the town needs to address the ammonia limits in the lagoons before an engineer gets involved. He said there are dead zones in the lagoons and he believes that if more oxygen is added it could help with the ammonia limits. 
Instead of spending $1 million on a new system, Zellers believes about $275,000 can be spent on a new process and some new equipment.
