Housing out-of-county inmates could benefit sheriff’s office

Pulaski County Sheriff Jeff Richwine gave the Pulaski County Commissioners both good and bad news during a regular meeting Monday evening. 
Richwine’s news included both collecting and spending funds. 
The first bit of bad news he discussed with the commissioners was about a deputy vehicle being recently involved in an accident. The vehicle, that is about four years old, is considered totaled. He has been looking for funds to replace it but no decisions have been made yet.
“We have got enough cars right now, we just don’t have a spare,” Richwine said. 
Richwine also told the commissioners he would like to purchase a new vehicle to transport inmates. The current van is a 2004 and travels across state. It has about 160,000 to 170,000 miles.
A motion was made for the sheriff to purchase two new vehicles, pending the county council’s approval. 
In regards to good news, Richwine said the jail is housing inmates from other jurisdictions including 10 from Howard County. Housing the out-of-county inmates allows for the jail to receive additional funding. The county is also housing some department of correction inmates and will be refunded for that as well. 
“I’m looking at maybe we will have about $100,000 without getting any more new people,” Richwine said. 
Commissioner Bud Krohn Jr. was absent from the meeting.
