William J. Hein

William J. Hein, 85, of Marrero, Louisiana, died Aug. 9, at his home with Fay (Guidry) Hein by his side. 

He was born Oct. 26, 1929, in Winamac, to the late Charles and Margaret (Gerner) Hein.

He was a graduate of Winamac High School. He married Fay Guidry in Detroit. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska, and after being honorably discharged in 1954 moved to Winamac for a brief time before moving to Chicago. 

While living in Chicago, William attended and graduated from Ray Vogue School of Design with a degree in interior design. After sustaining a personal loss, he relocated to Marrero in 1957. He was a licensed Louisiana Interior Designer and was the owner of Interiors by Hein, Inc. He worked for various New Orleans firms and stores. He retired from Mothe Life Insurance Co. as a project manager and designer for their properties.

William was a man of many talents having held many jobs over the years such as truck driver, clerk, fast food worker, real estate broker, bartender, design teacher, and furniture designer. He enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling, writing and going to the casino.  

He is survived by his sisters: Roseann H. Ols and Jean H. Becker; sister-in-law Lucia R. Gansauer; and former wife Fay Guidry Hein.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Margaret (Gerner) Hein; sons: Stephen W. Hein and Justin C. Hein; sisters: Dorothy H. O’Donnell, Ruth H. Dawson, Mildred H. Marquand, and Mary H. Fritz; and brothers: Donald Hein, Harry Hein, Jeremiah Hein, and Charles Hein.

Per William’s wishes, cremation took place in Louisiana with no services. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Oct. 26, at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Winamac, with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services. 

An invite is extended to a celebration of life luncheon at One Eyed Jack’s Restaurant in Winamac following services.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church or a charity of the donor’s choice. No flowers please.
