Virginia Anne Scheuerman

April 21, 1936 — Feb. 11, 2020

Virginia Anne Scheuerman, 83, of Hickory Creek at Winamac, claimed victory in Christ and went home to the Lord on Feb. 11.

Anne, as she was known by family and friends, was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, on April 21, 1936, as the youngest of seven children. Her parents, Herbert and Ester Zimmermann, were farmers in Easton Township, where Anne learned the hard and satisfying life of living on a farm. The Zimmermann children all graduated from St. John Lutheran School. After grade school, Anne attended Wausau High School and then went on to receive a bachelor of science from Wisconsin State Teachers College, Stevens Point, Wisconsin, in 1958. Her first teaching position was a Hawthorne School, Waukesha, Wisconsin.

On June 27, 1959, Anne married Conrad Scheuerman. They resided in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where she taught at the Jefferson School. After a few years and kids being born, Conrad’s job with Rockwell International took the family of five to Indiana where they settled into the small, farming community of North Judson. Both Conrad and Anne took great interest in the community and were active members at St. Peter Lutheran church and their kids attended the parochial school. Anne was an active member in the St. Peter choir, the ladies’ group, The Artisans and participated in women’s Bible study. Anne loved her home and garden. One of her many joys was providing seasonal flower arrangements for Sunday services with her flowers.

Anne had a beautiful voice and a melodious whistle. She was also a talented pianist and would sit at the piano playing and singing. Anne loved to sew and turned that passion into a fabric store named Country Knits. The business started in her basement and after a few years, moved to a storefront in North Judson. After closing Country Knits, Conrad and Anne owned and operated the Appliance and TV Center in North Judson for 20 years.

2001 brought retirement and the return to Wisconsin, with the last five years being residents at the Wisconsin veterans home. While at the veterans home, Anne was able to use her artistic talent and made flower arrangements and jewelry which she sold in the gift shop. Her items were in demand and would be purchased almost as soon as placed on the shelf. After Conrad’s death, Anne moved back to Indiana to be closer to her North Judson roots.

Anne’s real passion was helping others and she did so with a servant’s heart. Whether she was making a meal for someone, volunteer teaching home economics, donating her time and talent in various ways or visiting residents in the health care facilities where she resided, who did not get visitors, Anne was always on the lookout for a need to be filled. In the words of her sister, Doris, Anne was practical and gracious. She did not want accolades, Anne simply did not like seeing someone in need or hurting and did all she could to fill the void.

Anne is survived by her brother David [Norma] Zimmermann; sister Doris [Amory] Moore; children: Peter [Karen] Scheuerman of Plymouth, Wisconsin, Ruth Scheuerman [David Trusty] of Winamac, and Mary [Dan] McGhiey of Carmel; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a large extended family.

Anne was proceeded in death by her husband of 55 years Conrad; infant son Paul; brother Harold Zimmermann [Marion Blaska]; sisters: Mildred [Jerome] Seidl, Caroline [Harvey] Yolitz Serley and Wilma [Dave] Christ; and grandchild Daniel Prater.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter Lutheran Church, North Judson, on March 7 at 11 a.m. CST with visitation an hour before. Cremains of Conrad and Anne will be put to rest at Peace Lutheran Cemetery, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, at the family’s convenience.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Peter Lutheran Church and School, 810 W. Talmer Ave., North Judson, IN 46366 or Hickory Creek Healthcare Foundation at http://www.hickorycreekhealthcare.org/.
