Sandra S. Knebel

Sept. 21, 1937 — Feb. 26, 2017

Sandra S. Knebel, 79, of Winamac, formerly of Star City, passed away peacefully at 12:05 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 26, at her residence surrounded by her loved ones. 

She was born on Sept. 21, 1937, in Winamac, to the late Cecil and Jessie (Tyler) Hoover. On Sept. 25, 1955, she married Francis Neil Knebel in Star City. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1993. 

Sandy worked as a custodian at the Pulaski County Courthouse for many years. She also worked at the Colonial Inn and Wigwam in Winamac. Sandy loved music. She and her family performed country and bluegrass music from 1969-1979 across Indiana and southern Michigan. They appeared on channel 46 in South Bend and auditioned for Bill Monroe. 

Sandy was a member of the Star City United Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star (OES) 96 in Winamac. 

Sandy enjoyed bowling, softball, reading and gardening. She also enjoyed flowers, birds, her cats, arrowhead and mushroom hunting. Sandy was a die-hard Cubs and Bulls fan.

Sandy was a caring, selfless and giving person. She was a generous donor to many charities. Sandy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons: Stephen [Tina] Knebel of Winamac, and Kerry F. [Deb] Knebel of Muncie; daughters: Katherine S. [Drew Cannon] Holcomb of Winamac, and Debra [Terry] Ruff of Star City; Snickers the cat; 11 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and brothers: Terrill Hoover of Winamac, and Larry Hoover of Winamac. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Jessie (Tyler) Hoover; husband Francis Neil Knebel; daughter Karla (Knebel) Rausch; granddaughter Amanda (Knebel) Abbott; and brother Steven “Butch” Hoover. 

Visitation will be Friday, March 3, 4-8 p.m., at Frain Mortuary Winamac. OES services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 4, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, with Rev. Ruth Waite officiating. Burial will take place at McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Winamac.
