Sandra Lynn “Sandy” Walter

April 10, 1959 — Feb. 28, 2018

Sandra Lynn “Sandy” Walter, 58, of Winamac, formerly of Valparaiso and Chesterton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 28, in High Point, North Carolina.

Sandy was born on April 10, 1959, in Valparaiso, to the late Alexander and Loretta (Sandberg) Honchar.  She was extremely proud of her Russian and Dutch heritage and was very fond of her paternal grandmother Alexandria. Sandy was a 1977 graduate of Valparaiso High School, where she excelled in track and field.  On April 10, 1982, she married the love of her life, Thomas Walter, in Portage. Sandy and Tom were best friends.  They enjoyed traveling, camping, music and hanging out with friends and family.

Sandy was employed at Kmart in Valparaiso, Chesterton and Plymouth for 32 years and retired in 2013 as store manager of the Family Dollar Store in Winamac.

Sandy enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening.  She was a Certified Community Tree Steward in the State of Indiana and faithfully served on the Winamac Tree Committee. Sandy also enjoyed home remodeling and interior designing. Sandy and Tom restored their home in Winamac together.  Most of all, Sandy loved her family very dearly, especially spending time with her granddaughters.  Sandy was the foundation of her family — her presence will be sadly missed.

Survivors include her husband Thomas “Tom” Walter; daughter Carrie Walter; son John Walter; granddaughters: Melody Walter “Grammie’s Pumpkin Pie” and Anna Daugherty; sisters: Cheryl [Ron] Tight, Kim Riley, Jacalyn Schlundt; brother Alexander “Gene” Honchar; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Alexander and Loretta (Sandberg) Honchar; and brother-in-law Jerry Riley.

Visitation was 2-6 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Autism Association or to the Winamac Tree Committee.

Online condolences may be offered in the guestbook at www.frainmortuary.com.
