Richard D. Onken

Richard D. “Dick” Onken, 80, of Argos, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his loved ones at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at his home.

He was born on June 5, 1935, to the late Arthur and Helen (Waymire) Onken.

He graduated from Pulaski High School in 1954.

Dick married the love of his life, Phyllis Planck, on March 16, 1957, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives.

Dick served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea. He was a member of the Logansport Eagles #323. Dick was retired from GTE Phone Company where he had worked for more than 30 years.

Dick and Phyllis enjoyed spending their winters in Clearwater, Florida, for the last 20 years. Dick enjoyed playing cards with his friends in the little town of Etna Green.

Dick regularly attended Argos United Methodist Church.

Dick was a true family man, who especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife Phyllis (Planck) Onken of Argos; son Rodney Onken of Argos; daughters: Deanna Stevenson of Mason, Ohio, and Susan [Mark] Winkelman of Richardson, Texas; grandson Jeremy Onken; granddaughters: Jennifer [Jason] Laudeman, Brooke Stevenson and Shelby Rodriguez; great-granddaughter Taylor Laudeman; and great-grandsons: Bradyn Rodriguez and Owen Laudeman.

He was preceded in death by her parents Arthur Adolf and Helen V. (Waymire) Onken; sisters: Betty Gastineau, Margaret Behnke and Ruth McCracken; and brother Arthur E. Onken Jr.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Frain Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, with Rev. Heather Foley officiating. Burial will take place in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville. The American Legion will conduct military graveside services.

Memorial contributions may be given to Gentiva Hospice or American Cancer Society.
