Melvin LaVon Brogdon

Melvin LaVon “Nub” Brogdon, 76, of Kewanna, (Lake Bruce) passed away at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, surrounded by his family at home.

He was born on Nov. 29, 1938, in Monon, the only child of the late Melvin C. and Margaret (Adams) Brogdon.

He graduated from Monon High School in 1956.

On October 28, 1962, Nub married Katherine “Bunny” Smidler in Reynolds. She survives.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Guam before being honorably discharged. Nub was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Moose Lodge.

He retired after 34 years as an area supervisor for Gas Measurement and Transmission at NIPSCO.

Nub and Bunny enjoyed 21 years of wintering in Pine Island, Florida, and Avon Park, Florida. They also enjoyed living on Lake Bruce, especially fishing and boating. They have camped all over the United States and Canada.

Nub was a die-hard Indiana University Basketball and Bobby Knight fan. He was an avid Winamac Warrior fan and enjoyed attending his granddaughters’ sporting events.

He loved his Shih Tzu, Dixie, who was always by his side even when he passed away.

Nub was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to so many. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his wife Katherine E. “Bunny” (Smidler) Brogdon of Lake Bruce; daughter Pamela J. [Craig] Barr of Noblesville; son Melvin Scott [Missie] Brogdon of Winamac; and granddaughters: Lauren E. Barr, Emily M. Barr, Bethany M. Brogdon and Erika L. Brogdon.

He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin C. Brogdon and Margaret Adams Brogdon Pluimer.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac, and one hour prior to services Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at Frain Mortuary, with Pastor Rick Abbott officiating. Burial will take place in Bruce Lake Cemetery, Lake Bruce. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services.

The family requests memorial contributions to the Melvin “Nub” Brogdon Scholarship Fund to be established at First National Bank of Monterey which will benefit a graduate of Winamac Community High School who is pursuing a career in special education, nursing, physical therapy or occupational therapy.
