Mable Pauline (Dommer) Hankey

Sept. 6, 1924 — June 29, 2021

Mable Pauline (Dommer) Hankey, 96, of Indianapolis, died Tuesday, June 29.

Mable was born on Sept. 6, 1924, to Otto and Mollie (Henning) Dommer in Denham. She married Carl Alfred William Hankey on April 1, 1945. Over the years they lived on a farm in Jasper County, in Rensselaer, and in Indianapolis.

A lover of fashion, Mable was known for her vast collection of brightly colored hats, eyeglasses, and costume jewelry. She was a devoted member of Carmel Lutheran Church and enjoyed visiting with other parishioners during the coffee hour. Much to her grandchildren’s delight, she always snuck candy and surprises into the service. She volunteered with the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Mable had a zest for life and enjoyed entertaining, socializing, baking, playing cards and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her son Charles D. [Carol] Hankey of Indianapolis; two granddaughters: Anne H. [Randy] Forman of Glencoe, Illinois, and Emily C. Hankey of Brooklyn, New York; two great-granddaughters: Madeline and Elizabeth Forman; sister Mary Abbott; and two brothers: Donald Dommer and Rev. Ronald Dommer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Carl; daughter-in-law Elizabeth; her four sisters: Helen Berg, Velma Kasten, Thelma Weldy and Marcella Hoffman; and her five brothers: August, Walter, Harold, Henry and Richard.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 18 at 2 p.m. at Cornerstone Lutheran Church (formerly Carmel Lutheran Church), 4850 E. Main Street, Carmel, Indiana 46033, followed by an internment at Highland Cemetery in North Judson.
