Lois Tanner

Lois Tanner, 96, of Winamac, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 29. She passed away at Hickory Creek Nursing Home in Winamac surrounded by her family.  Lois was born on May 2, 1928 in Rensselaer, to the late Henry C. and Marie M. (Claussen) Nickels. She attended Medaryville High School through the eleventh grade and took her first job at the Medaryville Garment Factory.  

On Dec. 18, 1946, she married the love of her life, J.D. Tanner, at the Medaryville Methodist Church. Over the years, they lived in Medaryville, Monterey and Winamac.  In 1993, Lois retired from Eaton’s in Winamac. After retirement, Lois and J.D. enjoyed numerous winters in Florida. Sadly, J.D. passed away in 2008 prior to their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Lois was a longtime member of the Monterey United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting and sewing as well as playing BINGO. Lois was a loving and devoted wife, mom, grandma and GG. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include son Marvin [Margo] Tanner, Plains, Montana; daughters: Diana [Alan] Kado, Elkhart, Peggy [Willy] Bushong, Hamlet, Barb [Mike] Steffel, Hebron; granddaughters: Whitney [Steve] Spurr, Nicole [Michael] Turull, LeAnn [Mike] Hetrick and Veronica [Mike] Siwy; grandsons: Brent [Jessica] Kado, Jason [Abby] Kado, Will [Karen] Kado, Dustin Kado, Ryan [Jessica] Everage, Justin [Mindy] Everage, Aaron [Andrea] Everage, Billy [Tess] Bushong and Zachary [Nancy] Bushong; great-granddaughters: Cooper Spurr, Kendall Spurr, Mia Kado; Charlie Kado; Chloe Everage, Maggie Everage, McKenna Everage, Madalyn Everage, Olivia Everage, Isla Turull, Mara Turull, Genesis [Dwight] Tarnow, Faith Bushong, Ivanna Rodiguez, Hope Hetrick, Harper Hetrick, Emma Siwy and Camille Siwy; great-grandsons: Jennings Kado, Quinten Kado, Deisol Kado, Baine Kado, Salem Kado, Jackson Kado, Colton Everage, Keagen Everage, Cohen Bickett, August Turull, William J. Bushong, Noah Bushong, Diego Rodriguez, Allen Bushong; one great-great-granddaughter; brothers-in-law: Donald Tanner and Dean [Wilma] Tanner; sisters-in-law: Reba Kopka and Jackie Tanner; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. 

Preceded in death by parents: Henry C. and Marie M. (Claussen) Nickels; husband J.D. Tanner; sisters: Laverne Nickels, Evelyn [Orval] Grieger and Lorraine [Jay] Vawter; and brothers: Edward [Dorothy] Nickels and Hank [Mill] Nickels. 

Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

Additional visitation will be from 11 a.m. - noon Friday, Jan. 3, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. 

Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Jan. 3, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac with Willy Bushong officiating.

Burial will take place at Riverbank Cemetery in Winamac.

Memorial contributions may be made to Riverbank Cemetery.
