Leona R. Utterback

Leona R. Utterback, 92, of Francesville, passed away at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 at Hickory Creek in Winamac.

Leona was born on May 12, 1923, in Francesville, to the late William and Minnie (Kruger) Cords.

She married Donald C. Utterback on Sept. 2, 1942, in Medaryville. He passed away Sept. 21, 1996.

Leona graduated from Francesville High School in 1941. She was retired from Peoples State Bank in Francesville, where she had worked many years as a banker.

Leona was a very active member of St. James-Salem United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school and was also active in the ladies’ guild. Leona was also a member of the Pulaski Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Leona was an avid reader and enjoyed crosswords and word searches.

She was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her sons: Wayne D. [Linda] Utterback of Valparaiso, Allen L. [Ann] Utterback of Winamac, and Dennis D. [Phyllis] Utterback of Wheeler; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; sister Irene Walter of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brothers: Howard [Judy] Cords of Medaryville, and Merl Cords of Medaryville; sister-in-law Charlotte Cords of Lafayette; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald C. Utterback; parents William and Minnie (Kruger) Cords; infant Ralph Cords; brother Harry Cords; and daughter-in-law Judy Utterback.

Visitation was 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel, Francesville. Rev. Judith Doll officiated. Burial took place in St. James Salem Cemetery, Francesville.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. James-Salem United Church of Christ.
