John Gerald Phegley III

May 6, 1942 — Aug. 25, 2021

John Gerald Phegley III, 79, of Wheatfield, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 25. 

He was born May 6, 1942, in LaPorte to John Gerald Phegley Jr. and Lodema Mae (Powell) Phegley. John was a farmer for the majority of his life, and also worked as a base and bolt plate operator with Chief Industries in Rensselaer for 20 years before retiring. John liked watching car racing, baseball, and basketball, especially IU. He also enjoyed raccoon and duck hunting, and fishing. John bred, raised, and showed dogs for his entire life, and was a member of the AKC and UKC. John will be remembered for his ability to tell jokes and his dry sense of humor. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, who will be dearly missed.

John is survived by his daughters: Lisa [Andrew] Conley of Francesville, Beth [Kevin] Culp of Troy, Michigan, Holly Hartley of Demotte, Mandy [Gabriel] Almanza of San Jose, California; grandchildren: Chantel, Zephaniah, and Lazarus Conley, Christopher Culp, Bryant and Ariana Phegley; great-grandchildren: Liam and Luca Conley; and sister Carole Phegley. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister Sharon Svec.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 2 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. CDT at Kosanke Funeral Home, 105 E. Indiana Ave., Kouts, with a service to begin at 1 p.m. CDT.
