JoAnn Behny

JoAnn Behny, 90, of Winamac, passed away at 6:35 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at Peabody Retirement Community in North Manchester. 

She was born on Dec. 25, 1926, in Indianapolis, to the late Walter G. and Mary E. (Presser) Lange. JoAnn was a 1944 graduate of Winamac High School and had attended Indiana University, where she became a member of Phi Mu Sorority. On March 17, 1946, she married Donald G. Behny. He passed away Sept. 11, 2007.

JoAnn was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Winamac. She was a member of the Tippecanoe Chapter #96 OES where she had been Past Matron, Past Deputy District 17, and former Rainbow Mother Advisor. She was also a former Brownie and Girl Scout Leader and past president of the Winamac Alumni Association. JoAnn retired as Pulaski County Health Department Vital Records Registrar and Office Manager in 1997. Prior to that, she worked as a secretary at Winamac High School and the hospital planning foundation.

JoAnn enjoyed playing golf in the women’s golf league at Moss Creek Country Club as well as playing cards with her friends in the bridge club. She also enjoyed knitting, reading, and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her son Thomas M. [Gay Lyn Birkholz] Behny of The Villages, Florida; daughters: Pamela Behny [Richard] Scheffer of Largo, Florida, and Meg Behny [Kevin] Nethercutt of Savannah, Texas; granddaughters: JoLynn Behny [Jeff] Johnston of Winamac, Emily Scheffer [Thomas] Coffaro of Oviedo, Florida, Morgan Carter [Derek] DeZarn of Indianapolis, and Mallory Carter [Michael] Hall of Greenwood; grandsons: John R. [Leanne] Behny of Winamac, Joshua C. [Melissa] Behny of Fishers, Jediah T. [Megan] Behny of Westfield, and Zachary R. Scheffer of Orlando, Florida; stepgranddaughters: Stacy Nethercutt Griffin of Pottsboro, Texas, and Kali Nethercutt [Ryan] Downam of Ft. Wayne; stepgrandson Conner J. Nethercutt of Houston, Texas; great-grandsons: Payton J. [Audrey Mullis] Windsor of Bloomington, J. Hunter Price of Cheboygan, Michigan, Finian P. Behny of Fishers, Eli J. Coffaro of Oviedo, Florida, Sylar M. Hall of Greenwood, and Cameron Hall of Greenwood; great-granddaughters: Elise M. Price of Winamac, Gabrielle A. Behny of Winamac, Victoria R. Behny of Winamac, Caitlin M. Behny of Fishers, Grace E. Behny of Westfield, Lauren M. Behny of Westfield, Caroline S. Behny of Westfield, and McKinley Q. Coffaro of Oviedo, Florida; stepgreat-grandson Phillip [Rachel] Budd of Winamac; stepgreat-granddaughter-in-law Casey Budd of Brooklyn, New York; stepgreat-great-grandson Jackson Budd of Winamac; and stepgreat-great-granddaughter Brentley Budd of Winamac. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Walter G. and Mary E. (Presser) Lange; husband Donald G. Behny; daughter-in-law Nikki (Anderson) Behny; great-grandson Liam C. Behny; and stepgreat-grandson SSG. Andrew C. Budd. 

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac with Eastern Star services at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac with Pastor Jeff Seger and Pastor Rick Abbott officiating. Burial will take place at the Winamac Cemetery in Winamac.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Foundation of Pulaski County for the First Christian Church in Winamac.
