Jerry Allen Alexander, 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep Aug. 25.

He was born in Elkhart on May 5, 1940, to Charles E. and Lelia Miller Alexander.

Jerry grew up in Winamac where he attended St. Peter’s Catholic School serving as an altar boy. He graduated from Winamac High School in 1958 where he played on the basketball, baseball, and softball teams. He attended New York University obtaining an associate degree in merchandising and business management. Upon graduating, he joined the family business, Miller’s Department Store, in Monticello.

Jerry married Jerra Caccavo in 1963. She survives along with their three children: Jeffory [Angela] and John, both of Monticello, and Jennifer Tyler of Louisville, Kentucky. The light of his life were the five grandchildren: Tanner Alexander of Lafayette, Nick, Madalyn and Sloan Alexander, all of Monticello, and Ethan Tyler of Louisville, Kentucky.

Jerry was an accomplished golfer and belonged to Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello and Gator Creek Golf Club in Sarasota, Florida. He was an avid fan of the Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles attending all spring training games after retiring in 1994 and moving to Sarasota, Florida. He was a member of Incarnation Catholic Church and a Knight of Columbus. He served in the Indiana National Guard and Army Reserve for many years.

Jerry was a humble man with a soft spot in his heart for children. He willingly gave to many charities benefiting children.

A celebration of life will be Sept. 22 at Incarnation Catholic Church with interment in the Memorial Garden.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Incarnation Catholic School, Alzheimer’s Research, or Special Olympics would be appreciated by the family.
