Janet Lois Hartwick

Oct. 19, 1925 — Feb. 2, 2016

Janet Lois Hartwick, 90, of Winamac, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2, at her daughter’s home in South Bend.

She was born Oct. 19, 1925, in Winamac, to Peter and Mable (Freeman) Kruzick. 

Janet married Elmo Edward Hartwick on June 3, 1946. 

Janet was a 1943 graduate of Winamac High School. She worked out of her home as a dispatcher for Brada-Miller Freight Systems for many years. She was a bookkeeper at the Schultz Brothers Dime Store in Winamac for 25 years. Janet also drove a school bus for 12 years for Eastern Pulaski Community Schools (1973-1985). 

She was a 60-plus-year member of Order of the Eastern Star 96 in Winamac. Until recent years she was an active member of Pulaski County REACT and Pulaski County Human Services where she was awarded senior volunteer of the year. 

Janet was actively involved in the lives of her nieces and nephews. She was the family historian and worked extensively on the family genealogy records. She was an avid gardener. She enjoyed camping, making crafts, knitting, crocheting and playing board games and cards.

Survivors include her daughter Susan Hartwick of South Bend; granddaughter Martha Wagner of South Bend; grandson David Wagner of Elkhart; great-grandsons: Tilar Wagner and Wesley Wagner; stepgrandsons: Shaun and Jason Wilson; and sister-in-law Helen [James] (Coyne) Kruzick of Plymouth. 

She was preceded in death by her husband Elmo Edward Hartwick; parents Peter and Mable (Freeman) Kruzick; brothers: Phillip, Hubert, James and Emil; and sister Ruth Ault. 

Visitation was from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. A celebration of her life followed at 7 p.m., beginning with Eastern Star Services. Burial of cremains will take place in Winamac Cemetery, Winamac, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.
