Harry E. Miller

Harry E. Miller, 92, of Winamac, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Hickory Creek at Winamac.

He was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Winamac, to Frank and Cecelia (Gilsinger) Miller.

Harry married Mary Jean Malloy on Sept. 28, 1949, in Lafayette. Mary Jean died May 11, 2006.

Harry was a co-owner of the Miller Department store in Winamac for 65 years.

Harry was very active in the Winamac community throughout the years and was involved in many different organizations. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac and was a fourth degree Knight of Knights of Columbus. Harry was a former director of First Union Bank and Trust in Winamac. He was a World War II Army veteran. Harry was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He was a former member of the Winamac Kiwanis Club and served as an adult Scout leader and little league baseball coach. Harry was a former fireman with the Winamac Volunteer Fire Dept.

Harry enjoyed fishing, gardening and telling stories. He was a former Winamac Merchant League baseball player and avid bowler. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his daughter Kathleen A. [Robert] Rehlander of Noblesville; sons: Steven Paul Miller of Winamac, and Daniel G. [Susan] Miller of Winamac; grandsons: Steven [Kelly] Rehlander and Andrew Shaun Miller; granddaughters: Kristina [Stephen] Bixler, Lauren Marie Miller, Sarah Kathleen Miller and Anna Marie Miller; great-granddaughters: Natalie Miller and Isabella Bixler; great-grandsons: Colin William Rehlander and Benjamin Bixler; brother Adrian P. Miller of Winamac; and sister Alice Sue James of Lansing, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Jean (Malloy) Miller; parents Frank and Cecelia (Gilsinger) Miller; sons: James Patrick Miller and Michael Eugene Miller; sisters: Helen Miller, Irene Vansenus, Lelia Alexander and Velma Miller; and brother Ralph Miller.

Visitation was 3-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Frain Mortuary. A scriptural wake service was held at 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac. Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiated. Burial took place in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Winamac. The VFW and American Legion conducted military graveside services.

Memorial contributions may be given to Special Olympics or Boy Scout Troop 229.
