Harold C. Crater II

June 10, 1932 — March 23, 2015

Harold C. Crater II, 82, of Winamac, passed away at 12:39 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.

He was born June 10, 1932, in Lafayette, to Harold and Frances Helene (Williams) Crater I.

Harold married Betty Jean Russell on June 16, 1954, in Winamac. Betty died June 22, 1998.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winamac. Harold served in the Indiana Army National Guard. Harold and Betty returned to Winamac to live in 1986.

Harold was a former radio broadcaster and broadcast manager for WSJM Radio in St. Joseph, Michigan. He had worked for the Van Wert, Ohio, Chamber of Commerce, the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce and for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Harold was also an engineer’s assistant for the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Harold loved singing in the church choir. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles, sitting in his backyard enjoying nature and watching Cubs baseball. Harold liked watching the radio controlled aircraft at Braun Field in Winamac.

Survivors include his sons: David R. [Kim] Crater of Butler, Pennsylvania, and William F. Crater of Winamac; daughters: Rebecca H. Crater of Winamac, and Patricia C. Balcolm of Winamac; grandchildren: Jeramie [Shelli] Crater, Donald [Liz] Crater, Peter [Andi] Crater, Jason [Laura] Crater, Brent Crater, Kelley [Ben Enge] Crater, Matthew Crater, Elizabeth Crater, Nicholas Balcolm and Brian [Chantel] Balcolm; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jean (Russell) Crater; son Harold C. Crater III; great-grandson Landon Matthew King; and his parents Harold and Frances Helene (Williams) Crater I.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac and one hour prior to services at the First United Methodist Church, Winamac. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, at First United Methodist Church, Winamac, with Barbara Kleinofen officiating. Private burial will take place in McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Winamac.
