Elizabeth V. “Liz” Button

Elizabeth V. “Liz” Button, 100, of Winamac, passed away at 12:24 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Pulaski Health Care Center in Winamac. 

She was born on Sept. 24, 1916, in Hegewich, Illinois, to the late Andrew and Marie (Baynard) Sera. On Feb. 17, 1934, Liz married Forrest Melvin “Frosty” Button in Star City. He passed away Oct. 31, 1977.

Liz was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winamac. She was a charter member and past president of the Winamac Eagles Auxiliary #2580.

Liz loved her life as a farmwife and was retired from the dietary department at Pulaski Memorial Hospital in Winamac.

Liz enjoyed teaching her grandkids and great-grandkids the game of euchre and bidding seven when they bid six. She loved playing cards and bingo. She shared her love of cooking with friends and family. Her specialty was “nut roll” and fried chicken dinners. She also enjoyed dancing, gardening, and was never afraid to take all her grandchildren bowling and was always a patient teacher. 

Liz was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother who will be dearly missed. 

Survivors include her daughters: Betty L. Polstra of Star City, and Geneva I. McKinley of Winamac; son Melvin E. [Cleta] Button of Winamac; son-in-law Don Beaver of Apache Junction, Arizona; granddaughters: Darlene R. [Alan] Daily, Cathy S. [Don] Parsley, Lisa [Randy] Sommers, Debra [Fred] Smidler, Bunnie [Curt] Daugherty, Maxine J. Jimison and Cheryl A. Wentz; grandsons: Michael Polstra, Dan [Nancy] Beaver, Brian Beaver, Douglas [Sharon] McKinley, Steven [Theresa] McKinley, and Melvin Forrest [Karen] Button; 35 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Andrew and Marie (Baynard) Sera; husband Forrest Melvin “Frosty” Button; daughters: Judy [Jim] Hoover and Dorothy Beaver; granddaughter Sandy Beaver; grandson Bruce Polstra; infant great-grandson John Melvin Button; great-granddaughter Alicia Marie Smidler; three brothers; and two sisters. 

Visitation was Monday, Jan. 30, from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. Funeral services followed at 2 p.m. at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. Pastor Dave Marty officiated. Burial took place at McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Winamac.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulaski Health Care Center Activities Fund or Alicia Marie Smidler Animal Rescue Fund.
