Darrell E. Allen

Sept. 28, 1939 — April 13, 2018

Darrell E. Allen, 78, of Francesville, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Friday, April 13, at IU Health Hospital in Lafayette. 

He was born on Sept. 28, 1939, in Washington Court House, Ohio, to the late Joseph and Ida M. (Rayburn) Allen. When Darrell was six years old, his family moved from Kentucky to Bailey’s Corner. He was a graduate of Wheatfield High School. Darrell served in the U.S. Army during the Cold War. He was a member of the Francesville American Legion, Winamac VFW and Monticello AMVETS. Darrell was a past commander of the Francesville American Legion and longtime commander of the honor guard, a job which he did with pride. Darrell enjoyed teaching kids about the flag and driving the big drum that he built in area parades. He was proud to be a veteran and an American. 

Darrell married Joan K. Mueller in 1963 and the couple had three children: Lana, Bradley and Douglas.

Darrell owned and operated Allen’s Welding in Francesville for nearly 30 years. He also worked nine years at Wabash National in Lafayette and retired from Carpenter Farms.

On Feb. 25, 2000, Darrell married Karol Sue (Myers) Smith. He was a member of the Francesville First Christian Church. 

Darrell was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed trapping, hunting, and fishing as well as woodworking, building and antique collecting. He was an avid sports fan. Darrell loved his family very much, especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife Sue Allen of Francesville; sons: Bradley [Krista] Allen of LaGrange, Kentucky, and Douglas [Sarah] Allen of Aurora, Illinois; daughters: Debra [Doug] Chenoweth of West Lafayette, and Diana [Karla White] Smith of Lafayette; grandchildren: Kassidy, Kourtney, Lauren, Emily, Paige, Stephanie, Brandi, Kristina, Courtney, Tristan, Joshua and Elijah; and great-grandchildren: Keaton, Jax, Rheilynn, Traevyn, Maddock, Lily, MaKena and DeLainey.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Ida M. (Rayburn) Allen; infant daughter Lana Renee Allen; and brothers: Joseph B. Allen and Russell D. Allen. 

Visitation was 3-8 p.m. Monday, April 16, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville. Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville. Pastor James Ketchen officiated. Burial took place at Roseland Cemetery in Francesville. The American Legion and VFW conducted military graveside services.
