Dale R. Mitchell

Dale R. Mitchell, 97, lifelong farmer and resident of Winamac, died at 4:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, at Parkview Haven Retirement Home in Francesville. 

Dale was born on Nov. 28, 1920, in Mooresburg, to the late Charles E. and Grace (Rouch) Mitchell. Following graduation from Star City High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University where he was a member of the Purdue Glee Club. Dale served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a lifetime member of the Winamac American Legion. On Nov. 2, 1946, Dale married the love of his life, Doris J. Simmons, in Indianapolis. She died Feb. 13, 2011. 

Dale was a man of faith and was currently a member of the Pisgah Christian Church. He was a past board member of Emily Flinn Retirement Home in Marion, and the Star City Telephone Co. as well as a longtime director of Farmer’s Grain and Supply in Thornhope. 

Survivors include his son Randall J. [Sondra] Mitchell of Winamac; daughters: Marsha L. Sayers of Tipton, and Nancy M. Coates of Evansville; grandsons: Ryan [Diane] Mitchell, Joshua [Sarah] Mitchell, Corey [Mesa] Mitchell, James [Stacy] Sayers, Gregory [Andrea] Sayers, Timothy [Rebecca] Sayers, Kyle Coates and Benjamin Coates; granddaughters: Sarah [Todd] Carrington and Valerie [Ryan] Bishop; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles E. and Grace (Rouch) Mitchell; wife Doris J. (Simmons) Mitchell; and sisters: Helen Weeks and Hilda Heimansohn. 

Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac, with Pastor James Sayers officiating. Private burial will take place at McKinley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Winamac. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services.
