Constance (Connie) Hurst Grund

Constance (Connie) Hurst Grund was born on Sept. 7, 1920.

Connie married James A. Grund on June 27, 1942. He preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 2012.

They moved to Sheppard Field AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas during World War II. When James went to China during the war, Connie moved back to Peru and was pregnant with the couple’s first child. She lived with her parents when their first child was born.

Connie graduated from Peru High School in 1938 and was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended Indiana University Bloomington, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and National Honor Society. Locally, she was a member of the First Christian Church, associate chapter of Tri Kappa, Miami County Historical Society, the Republican Women’s Association, and the Dukes Hospital Auxiliary.

Connie kept busy in the summer months operating the couple’s four apartment rental business on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver. She was a homemaker and was always ready to help with any local projects or when anyone was in need. She loved her family and many friendships.

Connie and James had two sons: James H. Grund (deceased), and Jeffrey [Karen] Grund of Carmel; and one daughter Jane [Fred] Allen of Winamac; six grandchildren: Jama [Andrew] Lidral of Iowa City, Iowa, Judge James David [Shawna] Grund of Peru, Kama Grund-Rupenthal [Benjamin] Rupenthal of Fairfax, Virginia, Bradferd [Meghan] Allen of Winamac, Drew J. Allen of Winamac, and James D. Grund, Carmel; and seven great-grandchildren: Joseph Lidral, Hannah Lidral, Erin Lidral, Mallori Grund, Maci Grund, Addison Allen and Chase Allen.

Friends called from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, at the Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, at the Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home. Pastor Heath Hiatt officiated. Burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery.
