Bernard L. “Bernie” Knouff

Bernard L. “Bernie” Knouff, 87, of Winamac, passed away Friday, Nov. 16, at his home. 

He was born on Feb. 4, 1931, in Rensselaer, to the late Clarence and Christine (Shelly) Knouff. Bernie was married to Frances E. Kuhn on Oct. 13, 1956, in Culver. Frances survives.

Bernie worked for John Kelly and for Tim Wiegand at the Ace Hardware in Winamac for more than 37 years. He had worked at Galbreath Inc. in Winamac, for GalFab in Winamac and for Terry Truck Equipment in Winamac. Bernie was also a former employee of the Shell service station and for the Town of Winamac. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He served on the USS Oriskany. He received a medical discharge in 1954. 

Bernie was a member of the St. Peter Catholic Church in Winamac. He was a life member and past post commander of VFW Post 1728. Bernie was a member of the DAV. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially entertaining his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to bake pies. Bernie enjoyed woodworking and tinkering in his basement. 

Survivors include his wife Frances (Kuhn) Knouff of Winamac; sons: Joe [Gena] Knouff of Star City, and Greg Knouff of Winamac; adopted daughter Liza Schultz of Tecumseh, Nebraska; granddaughters: Jessica, Elizabeth and Michaela; grandson Nickalos; four great-granddaughters; four great-grandsons; brother Roger [Helen] Knouff of Rensselaer; and sisters: Georgianna Reed of Covington, Kentucky and Charlotte Faucher of Roselawn. 

He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Christine (Shelly) Knouff; daughter Veronica Lynn Knouff; brothers: Robert Knouff, Jim Knouff, Tom Knouff and Wayne Knouff; sisters: Betty Knouff, Mary Rowinski, Pauline Mullen, Virginia Schanlaub and (twin) Bernadine Baker. 

Visitation was from 3-8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 19, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. A scriptural wake service was held at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. A rosary service immediately followed the wake service. A funeral mass was held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Winamac. Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiated. Burial took place at St. Peter Cemetery in Winamac. The VFW and American Legion conducted military graveside services.
