Winamac council to meter fire department water

The Winamac Town Council will begin metering the fire department for water use as the town attempts to find out why the water loss is so high.
During a regular town council meeting on June 13, council members approved to purchase a meter for the fire department.
Water and street superintendent Jeremy Beckner said the meter is needed to track how much water is being used.
“This year I was pretty high on the water loss so I was trying to come up with ways to help capture that,” Beckner said. “This is one thing that is not metered and at times, they can use quite a bit of water.”
Beckner presented the council with two quotes for the meter. The meter is about 80-percent accurate, which is better than nothing, according to Beckner.
Councilman Dan Vanaman said he understands that the water loss has to be accounted for.
Councilman Tom Murray said when people use the hydrants that isn’t metered and goes against the loss also.
Councilwoman Judy Heater asked how much it would cost to install a meter on the system at the fire department.
Beckner said it is not recommended because the water lines are vertical not horizontal.
A quote of $2,717 for the meter was approved with opposition from Murray.
Councilmen Jim Watkins and Ken McFarland were absent from the meeting.
