West Central welcomes new board member, approves reduction in force

West Central School Corporation board members welcomed a new board member and made the tough choice of reducing the teaching staff during a regular meeting on June 2.
Before the board tackled any agenda issues, they welcomed new board member Amanda Sharpe. Sharpe was appointed by the school board and sworn in by Bonnie Koebcke, who is the corporation assistant treasurer and notary public.
Sharpe said she wants to learn how the school board functions.
Sharpe will finish the board term of David Allen who recently resigned because he was hired by the school corporation. Allen’s term would have been completed the end of this year.
Later in the meeting, the board approved a minor reduction in force.
Superintendent Don Street said the reason for the reduction is because of a declining enrollment of students, a reduction of revenue and an increase in expenditures.
The reduction of employees included three teachers, who were business, English and elementary school teachers. Because of the reduction, the teachers’ contracts were canceled and were effective at the end of the school year.
As part of the reduction, the teachers are on a recall list for the 2016-2017 school year.
