Town council hears future plans for Long Branch property, community pool

Although the Long Branch property is nothing more than a sandlot, the Winamac Town Council isn’t done with the renovation of it.
During a regular meeting on Feb. 8, the council members agreed that the area looks good, but a decision of what to do with it wasn’t made.
The Long Branch building was torn down on Jan. 28. Town manager Brad Zellers said it took about a day for the Long Branch building to come down and more than half a day to haul the debris away.
Zellers said the county was not able to help with the project because their trucks were down. Instead, a trucking company from Illinois hauled away five loads of debris for a cost of $2,070. It cost about $115 per hour and approximately 115 tons of debris were removed.
Councilman Tom Murray asked if the county was going to help share the costs because “they backed out on us.” Zellers said he is going to speak with the county.
Council members approved the cost of $2,070 for the removal of the debris. Zellers said at this time they do not have the costs of the tipping fees at the landfill.
After the council approved to pay the trucking company, Zellers gave an update on the next step for that area.
“Our goal is to let that settle — the sand settle,” he said. “We will get some black dirt hauled in and plant grass in it.”
Zellers said there are currently landscaping plans being drawn up for the Winamac Parkway from Main Street to the north and the Long Branch property could be included in that.
