Sewer district looks at raising rates because of lack of customer payments

As the Star City Sewer District is trying to be an efficient board and ensure all the bills are paid, they are looking at whether a rate increase is needed.
The concern is that the district bills will not be paid if the customer bills are not paid. Boardman Walter Craig said he and Mary Craig recently attended training that challenged the board members to look at the issues facing the utility district. He said one priority is board member retention.
Another is the financial stability of the district. Walter said he spoke with representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) during the training and voiced his concerns.
He was asked what would be a financial red flag for the district and Walter estimated that if the district hit the $97,000 mark it would be a significant problem.
Walter said the district needs to make sure they are closely watching the lack of funds because a rate increase may be needed. He doesn’t want to implement a large rate increase at once, but instead a little at a time.
Walter expects the district customers who are paying their bills to become angry with the rate increase decision. He encourages those who are behind to pay their bills.
