Old county home may be hard to sell

A decision made by the Winamac Plan Commission may have tied the hands of the Pulaski County Commissioners as they are trying to sell the county home property.
Pulaski County Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer has been working the last several weeks to try and rezone the old county home property to multi-family residential use.
At a regular meeting Monday night, Origer informed the commissioners that the rezoning request was denied with a 4-2 vote.
Origer said he explained to the Winamac Plan Commission that spot zoning is not illegal in Indiana, but due to the historic circumstances regarding the property, it would be the best option. Two of the members agreed with that but the others voiced their concerns including the property not being split or rezoning the property with the house and the farmland.
Origer said he realizes that the county doesn’t want to lose the property because of the REACT building and the sheriff’s department garden.
Origer said he still believes that the rezoning proposal is the best of the solutions. He also suggested that the county can attempt to sell the property and let the buyer request the rezoning.
Commissioner Larry Brady suggested that a commissioner attend the next plan commission meeting on behalf of the commissioners. Commissioner Terry Young agreed.
Commissioner Bud Krohn Jr. was absent from the meeting.
