Medaryville passes new ordinance in hopes of deterring semi noise

Medaryville Town Council members are again imposing a new ordinance, this time in hopes of reducing semi truck noise.
The ordinance was passed with little fanfare or comments from the council during a regular meeting on Aug. 17.
Ordinance 2016-08-01, prohibiting the unlawful use of engine and compression brakes (Jake Brake Ordinance), was approved with no opposition from the council.
It was first read to the few who were in the audience. According to the ordinance, the purpose of it is “to prohibit the excessive, loud, unusual or explosive use of engine and compressed air-braking devises within Medaryville.”
Emergency vehicles are exempt from the ordinance. The penalty for the ordinance is a $50 fine.
Councilman Robert Schultz questioned if the fine could be paid in town or at the county courthouse. Town attorney Amber Lapaich advised that the fine could be paid in town.
The council suspended Robert’s Rules of Order and read the ordinance by title only. It was then passed.
The ordinance will be advertised and become effective.
