Medaryville council plans to change trash ordinance

No decisions were made regarding seven trash ordinance violations in the Town of Medaryville, during a regular meeting on Feb. 17.
Town council members were to review the violations and decide what the next step is in each of those cases, such as whether to issue a fine.
Instead the conversation turned into what they consider trash to be and how they want to handle cleaning up the town.
During the past several meetings, town council members have been discussing how to clean up the trash and what the town is allowed to do.
Council president Robert Schultz said he would like to see letters sent to residents and homeowners with the March water bill. The letter would let residents know that on April 1, the council is “going to be out there looking at these places and they have time now to start working on it.” His suggestion is that residents go out each week and put the trash that is in the yard out for trash pickup. He mentioned lawnmowers, cans and various wood.
As the discussion continued about the trash, they looked at the photos of the seven properties that are in violation of the ordinance. Councilman Raymond Saltsman Sr. said “it’s just sad,” as he looked at the photos.
“It’s plain lazy is what it is,” Schultz said.
Councilwoman Suzanna Wilcoxon reminded Schultz that his definition of trash “is not everybody’s else definition of trash and that could be a big sore spot.”
Schultz said the ordinance will be changed and it will list “every little thing that I can think of in my mind and everybody else’s mind.” He said they are going to address these issues with some fines.
Clerk-treasurer Judy Harwood said she can write a letter about common courtesy and quote the current ordinance, but the council will need to change the ordinance to be more specific.
