Community pool committee diving into fundraisers

With the idea of warmer weather and summer during these cold days, some may be wondering if the community pool is any closer to becoming a reality.
When the Winamac pool closed before the summer of 2014, it was estimated to be about 30 years old. Due to the deteriorating conditions and increasing costs of maintenance, the Town of Winamac chose to close it.
Since then several members of the community including Judy Heater have joined together to see if a new pool or splash area is a possibility.
During a Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce meeting on Jan. 20, Heater gave an update on the community pool project. Heater, who is the president of the chamber of commerce, has organized a committee that is fundraising for the project and also overseeing the initial designs.
A fund has been started for the project and “there was a nice donation to get our fund up and moving,” Heater said. That donation has generated some excitement and the committee is planning several fundraisers throughout the year. Most of the fundraisers will involve food events.
Because the committee is just starting to raise funds for the more than $650,000 project, it could take some time before construction would begin on the pool. Heater said she would like to see the pool completed not this summer but the next.
Heater is hoping that with donations of time to remove the old pool by the town and other individuals that it will cut down on the costs. With those savings, she estimates the costs to be about $500,000.
She would also like to get some more people onboard for the project.
